It’s no secret that the world is facing significant environmental challenges, with climate change and environmental concerns affecting us all. As we move towards better ways of working and living, tech has a huge part to play in the future of our world.
THE PROBLEM
The United Nations reports that 10 million hectares of forests are destroyed every year, and over 17 million metric tons of plastic entered the ocean in 2021, with projections to double or triple by 2040. In addition, due to climate change, medium to large-scale disasters are expected to increase by 40% from 2015 to 2030, and global reliance on natural resources has risen by over 65% from 2000 to 2019. These problems are too big to fight alone; we need a supportive network of every business, government, and individual.
THE ROLE OF TECH
Tech is the fastest and most impactful driver of change we currently have. The tech industry is on a catch-up mission when it comes to environmentalism; due to the specific difficulties of being eco-friendly in tech, it has fallen behind other industries. But with the development of smarter technologies and more thoughtful approaches to circularity, we are now seeing companies move much faster in this space. Sustainability concerns have become true drivers of innovation, with tech able to bring together sustainability and efficiency.
Now more than ever, the tech industry has a responsibility to produce high-quality products that last, reducing waste. One of the most significant challenges the industry faces is the waste generated by the constant replacement of laptops, phones, and other electronic devices, which is why it is essential to think about tech in terms of a circular economy model, where items and materials are recycled and reformed to be used again. Targus is tackling the throwaway tech culture with longer warranties and a commitment to creating universally compatible tech, reducing obsolescence and wastage.
In addition to sustainability in the production process, consumer technology hardware can also play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. One example of this is the use of smart technologies in homes, offices and public buildings. Smart devices such as lighting systems and smart power plugs can automatically adjust to save energy and reduce emissions; MiraLogic is a great example of this. Additionally, advancements in battery technology have led to the development of more efficient and long-lasting batteries for consumer electronics, reducing the need for frequent replacements and ultimately reducing waste. The integration of renewable energy sources such as solar panels with these devices also offers the potential for carbon-free energy consumption. Overall, the continued development and implementation of sustainable and energy-efficient consumer hardware technology will play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Although challenges such as international and regional differences in waste management, legislation, and best practice exist, the company manages them by thinking globally and executing locally wherever possible.
We recently published our first Sustainability Report, detailing our journey towards becoming a more sustainable company. The focus is now on the future and growing the roadmap, recognising the significant role the tech industry has to play in the fight against climate change, with Targus committed to doing its part.
THE FUTURE
The role of tech companies in the fight against climate change is significant. Tech is the fastest and most impactful driver of change we currently have. While the tech industry has fallen behind other industries, companies are now moving much faster in this space due to the development of smarter technologies and more thoughtful approaches to circularity.
